BEHIND THE OWL

Behind the Owl

Hi, I’m Tamara Burkett.

Welcome to The Salty Owl Co.

This space was created from a love of good food, coastal living, meaningful travel, and the simple moments that make life beautiful. But before there was a name, a logo, or a website, there was an owl.

For as long as I can remember, a family of owls has called our property home. Year after year, they’ve returned, becoming a familiar and cherished part of our lives. On quiet evenings, as the day winds down and the sky begins to fade, their hoots echo through the trees.

It’s a sound that fills my soul.

There’s something comforting about knowing they’re there—watching over the landscape, marking the seasons, and reminding me to slow down and appreciate the beauty around me. No matter how busy life becomes, hearing those familiar calls always brings me back to what matters most.

When it came time to create this brand, choosing the owl felt natural.

The Salty Owl Co. is a reflection of the life I love most: cooking fresh seasonal meals, exploring coastal towns, discovering local flavors, welcoming family and friends around the table, and finding inspiration in everyday moments.

Here you’ll find recipes inspired by the seasons, travel stories from places near and far, ideas for entertaining, and glimpses into a lifestyle rooted in simplicity, gratitude, and good living. Whether it’s a seafood dinner shared on the patio, a favorite hidden-gem restaurant, a weekend adventure, or a new recipe made from scratch, my hope is to inspire you to savor life a little more fully.

The owl reminds me that some of life’s greatest gifts aren’t grand or complicated. They’re found in familiar places, in everyday rituals, and in taking the time to notice what’s already around us.

Thank you for being here and for joining me on this journey. I hope The Salty Owl Co. inspires you to create memorable meals, explore beautiful places, and savor the everyday moments that make life meaningful.

With gratitude,

Tamara Burkett

  1. What luck to land on your blog site, Tamara. I live in Edmonds, and Roman meatballs with polenta is my favorite dish at Fire and the Feast. I have been going annually in the fall to Italy for the past 25 years, and this dish is the closest to genuine Italian style comfort food that I have found in our region.

So glad to have found this recipe which I will share with Ballard friends when they come for a holiday meal!

    1. Hi Patricia. Thank you for your comment. My husband has quite a few electrical clients in Edmonds and we enjoy trying all the fabulous restaurants. I have tried the pizza (artichoke, apricot, green olive, etc.) and a seasonal salad at Fire & Feast and it was delicious. Looks like I need to try the Roman Meatballs now! Thanks again for the lovely comment!
